key priorities
Free bus passes for teenagers
Affordable, accessible swimming lessons and lifeguarding courses at the YMCA
A commitment to reviewing spending and to stabilize taxes
Add or improve sidewalks to allow more children to safely walk to school
Advocate for first year University/college courses to be offered at the John Horgan Campus in Langford
Ensure bylaw enforcement officers perform a daily morning sweep to ensure there aren't needles or other dangerous items left in parks, school walkways, and other community areas
AFFORDABILITY
The first priority of a new council should be to stabilize taxes and should commit to reviewing property tax rates in a formal resolution at council’s first meeting. This will require a review of all expenditures and that the city provides. Holding taxes to a two to three percent inflationary rate per year is reasonable, as is holding the mayor and council’s remuneration to only inflationary increases.
Affordability for families in Langford means reviewing service costs as well. There have been conversations about sewer hookup fees, drop-in fees for recreation at the Westhills YMCA . All city service fees should be reviewed for affordability - particularly in these tough economic times.
TRANSPORTATION
Currently, all children up to age 12 have are free to travel on public buses. I would advocate through the CRD and the transportation committee to provide a free bus pass for ALL youth ages 13 to 18.
RECREATION
Ensure that its recreation keeps pace with population growth.
Lifeguarding and swim instructor courses offered at the Westhills YMCA.
Provide lifeguarding at the swimming docks on Langford lake.
INFRASTRUCTURE
Support densification of the city core to include condos, businesses, and office buildings.
Ensure that sidewalks to schools are built so that kids across the community have safe access to school every day.
Ensure that sufficient parking is included in new buildings and does not overflow onto designated street parking in the city.
TRAFFIC
Bus stops need to be designed to allow buses to pull off the road and allow traffic to pass.
Create extra turn lanes for traffic joining the Trans-Canada Highway.
Strongly advocate for the dedicated bus lane planned from the Westshore to Victoria to be designated an HOV lane.
SERVICES
Strongly advocate with our provincial government for the need to provide access to government services outside of the City of Victoria.
Ensure that the John Horgan Campus provides first and second year courses for people wanting to further their post secondary education.
Ensure that child care spaces continue to grow with population.
SAFETY
Ensure adequate funding of police officers
Ensure cooperation with RMCP officers and mental health support workers to help get unhoused people off the street and receiving the support they need.
Bylaw enforcement officers to perform daily sweep of parks and school walkways.
We need practical solutions to make it easier for people to get around in ways that reflect real life, now and as Langford continues to grow.
